We renovated a 16th century building in ruins into a minimalist retreat in Santo Domingo. Revamp lasted 2.5 years as no floors or solid walls were found.
It belonged to the once first hospital in the Americas, started in 1503, UNESCO heritage. Historic district is transforming from the disregarded to the fancy quiet area.
Architecture is both modern and minimalist, honoring the (in some parts) 500 years old rammed earth walls sobriety.
We hired local artisans on bespoke rattan chairs, furniture made of mahogany from the roof, and cacti pots cast. Finishings are natural: creamy limed washed walls, exposed cement floors, handmade concrete tiles, original wooden dintels.
FIXIE offers 7 loft apartments, each one equipped with a kitchen and an en suite bathroom. Some have private balconies, while others large windows looking to a quiet cacti filled courtyard. They are called lofts for the ceilings height and open space plans.
Conceived as an urban retreat, guests have access to a variety of areas: pool, inner courtyards, sundecks and co working lounge. The perfect note between private space and a communal spirit.
The pool sits below the original XVI century arches which were found in state of ruin. Some archaeological objects where found here.
Finally, film photography is featured on large format bed headboards and light boxes throughout the retreat.
We are a married couple from Spain Venezuela, with 10 years experience on vacational apartments in Madrid. Santo Domingo historic district is transforming from the disregarded to the fancy quiet area, so we looked for the right property for a full revamp.
