This project was all about creating the most out of the available space. Because the footprint of this downtown Portsmouth, New Hampshire, home is relatively small for a family of 5 (plus several animals), we really had to put our design hats on to maximize the efficiency of each square foot. The original layout was a series of rooms with doors, and our goal was to open the space up for a more modern look as well as give the family functional space to be together. By minimizing the amount of space given to hallways, we managed to create four bedrooms, four bathrooms, two family rooms, a living room, dining room, kitchen, office, and mudroom.
While none of the rooms are particularly large, they are equipped with considerable built-in storage space, and the home has a welcoming and open feel. Working with a natural modern feel, we used concrete countertops from Ceasarstone; cork kitchen flooring; white-washed barn board and reclaimed wood; Kallista fixtures; and draperies by Hunter Douglas.
