The Drake House is located in the Humboldt Park neighborhood of Chicago. And rather than raze the existing structure to replace with an expensive custom dwelling, the existing home was modestly rehabbed to incorporate modern amenities and efficiencies throughout. Both the nicely-proportioned exterior and the moderate renovation of the interior give the owners a custom and modern, yet economical home.

The exterior aluminum siding was cleaned up and painted in part to maintain its place in the neighborhood. Interior renovations included a new custom stair, opening up of the kitchen, extending an existing double dormer on the 2nd floor, and enlarging the windows where possible. Reconfiguring the typical layout of the Chicago style bungalow has made the 2,200 square foot plan feel comfortable and spacious. The home is now decorated with light wood finishes and brightly colored walls and accents adding playfulness to certain spaces and a warm feeling overall. The Drake House is evidence that you can achieve sustainability, quality and custom details, but remain cost-efficient by making modest, decisive choices.
