DP World Headquarters – Port of Maputo: A New Architectural Gem in Mozambique’s Capital
The DP World Maputo Container Terminal in Mozambique’s bustling Port of Maputo has recently unveiled a new administrative building that reflects the port’s global reach and modernization efforts. The DP World Headquarters, designed by SECON, is a sleek and sustainable structure that serves as the management and administration offices for the container yard and quay control.
Completed in 2022, the DP World Headquarters boasts a total gross built area of 7,600 square meters, comprising a building area of 2,100 square meters and an external area of 5,500 square meters. It is located at the Port of Maputo, and serves as the heart of DP World’s local operations.
Designed by lead architects David Alcobia and João Athayde e Melo, the DP World Headquarters is a testament to the transformative power of architecture. The building’s square shape and central garden provide a green oasis in the midst of the port’s harsh landscape, with the garden bringing light and greenery to the entrance lobby and dining area. Two vertical access areas divide the building’s main functional areas of administration and training, while a plateau for shared areas, a South block for administration, and a North block for personnel training unite the building - Two buildings in one.
The DP World Headquarters’ façade is a visual masterpiece, with structural columns that act as shading blades, helping to reduce cooling costs passively. The overlapping of the structural and shading solutions results in a strong image that is suitable for the institution’s aspirations. Due to pollution from the nearby open-air coal terminal, the windows are non-opening, with the intention of obtaining great natural lighting and transparency without losing the necessary privacy of the various sectors.
The DP World Headquarters’ roofs are technical, providing HVAC, water purification, solar thermal, and communication systems. The building is also designed to be energy-efficient and environmentally sustainable, reducing its carbon footprint and supporting the port’s green initiatives.
The DP World Headquarters is a testament to the power of architecture to transform spaces and create functional and sustainable structures.
