The Nelson Pendant from Design Within Reach creates sculptural statement lighting over the dining area to ground the space. The original shutters were removed and replaced with clean streamlined roller shades. Small modern chairs and marble pedestal dining table creates a cozy atmosphere to maximize the limited space. We removed the pendant light from the hallway and opted for recessed lighting instead. We also changed out the original flat-panel doors for two-panel doors to add more dimension. Terry and Steve moved from Seattle to Walnut Creek to retire in sunny California. The 1200 square foot condominium was dingy, cluttered, and lacking the open, airy, indoor-outdoor California feeling they desired. The challenge was to take a small space and open it up to feel light and spacious. Soft colors and continuity dramatically transformed the space so it now feels much larger than its 1200 square feet.
I’m really pleased by this beautiful evolution of an otherwise dull living space. Terry and Steve now feel they have a “kick-ass house”! I believe any homeowner would be inspired by these photos to creating serenity and light in their own homes.
To remove the claustrophobic clutter, I installed abundant storage space with sleek, pretty lines in the kitchen, baths, and master bedroom. Serenity and light emerged magically with the absence of all the “stuff” scattered everywhere!
Floor to ceiling glass brought light and the beautiful outdoors into Terry and Steve’s new home. They’re now living the California dream!
