A four-storey apartment building exudes calm and serenity in Chennai, India
The city of Chennai is an exuberant journey through a rich cultural heritage that comprises of beautifully carved temples, traditional delicacies, soul-pleasing music, and crystal blue beaches. With over 6 million locals, Chennai, the metropolitan capital of Tamil Nadu, shoulders the responsibility of significantly contributing to the historical treasure of India. Egmore, a major hub that hosts several residential and commercial developments, was the site for a residential apartment building of four floors, with the client entrusting Mumbai-based architectural firm Atelier ARBO.
Entering a relatively small parcel of land, having an area of just 2,100 square feet, one encounters the subtle aura of this apartment building – whose façade beautifully blends the rustic charm of bricks with the minimal simplicity of concrete. Accommodating two lavish three-bedroom apartments, one luxurious duplex, and a common lounge space for residents, the building covers 6,500 square feet of total built-up area.
Taking the natural site context into consideration, the design evolved around the concept of ‘Biophilia’ – which translates to the seamless connection of built spaces with nature. Reinforcing this further, the ground floor level has a small pocket garden and a collection of open green spaces that amalgamate gently with the common lounge space, adding a refreshing quality to the building. Adequate parking facilities for the families also form a part of the ground floor.
Once you reach the first and second floor level, a spacious three bedroom apartment invites the residents for a homely and comfortable stay. An expansive living room extending into a balcony is the first space one encounters, which can become an ideal location for social parties and family get-togethers, along with the dining area and the open kitchen. A master bedroom having its own large bathroom and a generous walk-in closet can be occupied by the homeowners whereas the other self-contained bedrooms have been aptly designed for kids or guests. The incorporation of large windows and balconies further encapsulates visual connectivity with the surroundings, while also welcoming cool breeze and abundant daylight into the house.
Aligning with the client’s wishes and requirements, the third and fourth floor together form a lavish, state-of-the-art duplex that hosts several luxurious amenities, like a home theatre, a built-in bar, and open garden terraces on both levels. An internal staircase connects the two floors, systematically binding the expansive bedrooms, plush bathrooms, dining, kitchen, and a palatial living space. The open terraces, having ample seating, offer picturesque views of the lush outdoor landscape, encouraging the family members to spend some quality time together overlooking the city.
The planning of an apartment building is an extensive process of research and conceptual exploration, especially when the site is relatively small. Comprehending the contextual relevance, a conscious approach on the design team’s part led to a well-planned, clean, and systematic idea of a warm and welcoming apartment building against the backdrop of Egmore, a vibrant neighbourhood of Chennai.
