Bar Goto Niban is the Brooklyn counterpart of the celebrated - “New York bar with a Japanese soul,” Bar Goto, on NYC’s Lower East Side. Bar Goto Niban was founded by bar maven, Kenta Goto, and blends sophisticated Japanese cocktail tradition with casual New York drinking culture for a groundbreaking contemporary izakaya.
Since its opening in 2015, Bar Goto has received overwhelming acclaim and recognition as one of the first Japanese-American crossover bars in the United States. Critics and patrons alike love the unpretentious, yet elegant atmosphere of the Lower East Side staple. Following the success of Bar Goto, Kenta Goto and his wife, Sarah, opened Bar Goto Niban (meaning ‘second’) in early 2020, which was named a 2020 Tales of the Cocktail Spirited Award finalist for "Best New American Cocktail Bar".
Bar Goto Niban takes cues from Modern Japanese design - moody and refined with clean lines and natural materials. Though dimly lit, the inviting and elegant space can seat up to 45 guests, including a 16-seat bar and a banquette. The venue seems to glow in a golden hue at night, which is both inviting and flattering. Customers can enjoy quiet moments during the week and in the early evenings, and buzzy high energy on weekends. Acting as the focal point of the space is intricate hand-painted, 35-foot wallpaper that lives behind the bar depicting a golden Japanese garden scene - opulent, but masterly done. Its delicate beauty is juxtaposed with the space’s concrete details, echoing the concept’s dual Tokyo-New York influence.
