A Light-Filled Family Apartment in Almaty Thoughtfully Crafted for Everyday Living
In the heart of Almaty, a city surrounded by the snow-capped Tien Shan mountains, a spacious apartment becomes a quiet celebration of light, space, and family life. Located in the elegant Esentai Residential Complex, this 2,615-square-foot home was designed for a couple raising five children. Every element reflects a balance between clarity and warmth, structure and emotion.

The project began with the idea of a simple refresh but soon unfolded into a complete rethinking of how the space should function. The dark wenge floors were replaced with warm, pale wood. Heavy built-ins were removed to allow for a lighter flow. Lighting was carefully reworked to match the rhythm of daily life, and smart storage solutions were integrated into every room.

The atmosphere draws gently from Manhattan’s quiet modernism. Floor-to-ceiling windows open up to the dramatic landscape. Materials are natural and understated, chosen for their texture as much as their tone. A central column, once a difficult architectural feature, now becomes part of the language of the room, wrapped in Cassamance wallpaper that matches the walls with subtle continuity. Lighting by Lodes and Aromas del Campo adds depth overhead without distracting from the architecture.

The living and dining areas are both open and intimate. A modular sofa offers softness and scale, while a sculptural dining table stands beneath a chandelier of pink glass orbs that seem to float above the room. The kitchen is narrow and refined, with clean cabinetry, brass details, and a long mountain view from the window.

Each of the children’s bedrooms carries its own personality. The eldest daughter’s room feels mature and composed, with twin desks, rounded chairs in soft colors, and a calm palette that encourages focus and creativity. The younger girls share a dreamlike space, where cloud-shaped headboards and rounded brass wall lights create a gentle, playful rhythm. The walls are left blank, ready to become a gallery of their own artwork in time.

The parents’ bedroom is designed for quiet retreat. Soft textiles, champagne tones, and wallpaper by Yana Svetlova create a layered, serene atmosphere. Wardrobes are decorated with crane motifs, adding a quiet sense of poetry to the room.

This is a home that holds space for every moment of family life. Nothing here is accidental. Every surface and layout has been shaped to support both beauty and use, offering a sense of calm that feels completely lived in.
