ADU 208 * Bozeman, MT * 597sq.ft of living space * 18' x 20' footprint * shed roof 16' - 19.5' H
Our 'senior circumstances' precipitated a move from rural Montana where we raised our family and personally handcrafted our small log cabin homestead.
Our eldest son resides in the heart of beautiful downtown Chicago. His brother remained in the mountains, is a Ranger with the U.S. Forest Service, lives in Bozeman, and recommended a downtown neighborhood we might like to find ourselves. So it was here that we purchased a corner lot with alley access.
The '68 ranch house was oriented on the property in such a way that would allow an ADU to be constructed and still maintain three quarters of the lot in greenspace. A priority!
ADU's in Bozeman are restricted to under 600 square feet of living space, 22 feet in height, 1 bedroom, 2 person occupancy and a designated off-street paved parking spot.
I believe our detached unit was one of the first in downtown not built over a garage.
My design goals were centered around placement and privacy concerns with low streetscape visibility. A small apartment house and parking area borders our lot to the south. I wanted to give ADU 208 it's own identity and sense of separateness from the main house. A small lot within a lot. The side and backyard fencing of our home attaches to the ADU but the ADU is not within it's perimeter. In otherwords, our old Lab, Mocha, is free but confined in his own yard space.
Setbacks, snow loads, stairs, plate steel limitations, size and small budget considerations all presented challenges I welcomed.
The most difficult but prudent decision was to give up full control over the project to a professional contractor. With my penciled plans in hand, she was invaluable in her knowledge and management skills of the building industry.
The residency of the structure will serve multi-purposes and will help considerably for an aging couple on a small fixed income!
My mantra has always been quality over quantity! Living big in a small space!
I think ADU 208 is a successful example of clean design, sustainable materials and maximum use of space. That being said:
At another time I'd like to have my open, floating, black cold-rolled steel staircase but city building codes still overrule 'artistic function' at this moment! C'est la vie!
* I attach a few photos of our small log cabin construction, which include the rock work and furnishings, to give you an idea how far I swung in the opposite direction on the design spectrum on this addition to our new home. Out of my comfort zone and into a new stage of our lives!
