Interior designer, Jess McNaughton, and her family were searching for more space during the pandemic. They found it in a suburban LA mid-century ranch, which received a prior update in 1992 by Kevin Daly Architects. The artist prior owner desired a gallery space with plenty of room to entertain. The Gehry inspired redesign included sculptural details in custom douglas fir millwork, and aluminum fireplace, reminiscent of Gehry's Walt Disney Concert Hall, also completed in the early 1990s. McNaughton brought the space into the 21st Century, preserving the integrity of the 1992 remodel, while creating a comfortable environment for her and her husband, and 12 year old daughter, as well as two dogs and two cats. The frosted glass kitchen counter and backsplash were replaced with Caesarstone and Fireclay Tile. The kitchen island was expanded with terrazzo by Concrete Collaborative. Track lighting and an overabundance of can lights were removed and replaced with Pol Potten pendants and an Arteriors semi-flush mount above the dining table. The faded, yellow birch floors were replaced with wide plank french oak. The fireplace kept it's shape with a natural plaster taking the place of reflective tin. Former built-in entertainment cabinetry, made for a large box TV and DVD player, were repurposed into display shelving and a space for a turntable. Patterns, texture, and color now bring life to a formally sterile atmosphere. The primary suite, which overlooks the tropical pool area, now brings the outside in with palm patterned wallcovering, a vintage Moroccan rug, and rattan accent pieces. More sculptural custom cabinetry leads into the primary bath. Formally covered in white subway tile and chrome, the bath is now finished with handpainted Fireclay Tile, and snow white Zellige tiled shower. A stand alone resin tub from Signature Hardware, and two separate mauve vanities, complete the updated look.
