Named Three Hawks Ranch, this 106-acre coastal ranch estate is brimming with natural beauty and modern amenities. Located approximately two hours north of Los Angeles in the most historically significant section of the Gaviota Coast, 2377 Refugio Road is an exceptional California coastal retreat dotted with 100-year-old oak trees.

Part of the original land grant made by the King of Spain to Jose Francisco Ortega in 1794, Three Hawks Ranch is located next door to the historic Reagan Ranch, where President and Nancy Reagan spent nearly 1,000 days during his Presidency.

Today, the property’s original stone house from the 1920s has been remodeled and expanded to be a majestic main house. A living room has been added to offer seaside exposure, built out of hand-cut sandstone boulders found on the property itself, as was the original house nearly 100 years ago. The estate’s soaring 12-foot ceiling and wrap-around glass walls capture a stunning, 15-mile view down the hillside, across the ocean and out to the Channel Islands.

Three additional bedrooms and two baths have been added to accommodate family and guests and were also constructed from the property’s one-foot thick sandstone blocks. Find wide oak plank floors throughout, as well as a chef’s kitchen—equipped with travertine counters and modern appliances—which opens to the dining and living rooms, both anchored by massive wood-burning stone fireplaces.

Hand-laid stone pathways behind the house lead to the outdoor dining courtyard, which centers around a wood-burning grill and dining table for 20, all nestled beneath a heated loggia and covered with fragrant jasmine vines. In the evening, enjoy dinner al fresco beneath a cathedral-like ceiling of ancient oak trees, illuminated by candle-lit lanterns and the starry sky above.

On the home’s opposite side sits a large fire pit and seating area with expansive ocean views. Beyond that, take a flower-lined pathway to the new heated swimming pool and cabana, also built exclusively from the property’s own sandstone. Outfitted with plush seating for 20 and its own wood-burning fireplace, this cabana is a favorite gathering place from dawn to dusk.

2377 Refugio Road is also home to two luxury yurts outfitted in an exotic safari theme—perfect for those who love a little “glamping.” Each yurt is luxuriously furnished and includes heating, air conditioning and plumbing, and can comfortably accommodate a family of five (or a pack of teenagers whose bedtimes are a bit later than their parents).

Also on the property are two barns. The Lower Barn houses ranch tools and equipment, including a tractor, wood splitter, wood chipper, brush mowers and chainsaws, while the Upper Barn contains ATVs, go-karts, dirt bikes and trucks. Alternatively, the Upper Barn can be used as a five-car garage. The garage contains two 220v Tesla chargers. One corner of the Upper Barn includes a fully equipped fitness area and weight rack.

Beside the Upper Barn is a newly-constructed staff house containing two bedrooms and a spacious living room, kitchen and herb garden. This estate can be used either for live-in ranch managers or for staff called in for a weekend or event.

In the middle of these beautiful structures stands the heart of Three Hawks Ranch—a flourishing fruit tree orchard filled with 60 trees that produce oranges, lemons, limes, plums, peaches, nectarines, pears, figs, olives, avocados and pomegranate. This private fruit basket also includes boxes of raspberries, herbs and roses.

Three Hawks Ranch is a short, scenic two-hour drive from Los Angeles, just 95 miles along the coast up the 101 (or a very quick helicopter ride). It offers convenient access to the shopping and gourmet dining of Santa Barbara 15 miles to the south, as well as to the Santa Ynez wine country just 20 miles further north. Offering endless trails for hiking and horseback riding, large open fields for skeet shooting or frisbee with the dogs, or just a quiet place to watch the sunset over the ocean with a glass of wine, Three Hawks Ranch is the perfect country refuge from the noise and stress of the city, and a magical, natural wonderland for children and grown-ups alike.
