515 Windswept

Asheville, North Carolina
Location
  • Asheville, North Carolina
  • Faced with a complex site, Windswept's main approach was decidedly simple: encourage a modern minimal lifestyle.

The owners desire a home that balances room functionality with living space to create a retreat-like feel. An emphasis on indoor/outdoor living and respecting the steep, largely wooded site contribute to the overall design decisions.

The owners were instantly attracted to the wooded site that offers expansive winter views of the mountains and downtown Asheville.

The lot is private, yet only one mile to downtown. Because the entire site is a very steep slope (44%), the site approach intended to make the building footprint as compact as possible and disturb the least amount of natural area.

The plans allow for open living and a blurring of indoor and outdoor space.

Square footage is prioritised in living spaces while bedrooms and bathrooms have a more efficient layout. Outdoor decks face sunset mountain views and downtown Asheville. The kitchen and living space are sunk below the primary entrance to encourage privacy from nearby condominiums.

Large wood clad windows and doors were selected to allow daylight and views to the wooded site; making the home feel larger and reinforcing a connection to exterior. Morning light is gained with east facing overhead linear windows yet privacy is maintained from the neighbouring condominiums. The interior color palette is largely neutral with white and warm grays. This lets the changing colors of the seasons be celebrated through the multiple wood clad windows and patio doors. The 4” white oak floors are stained a soft gray.
