From RZ Interiors

A collaboration between RZ Interiors and a noted Toronto-based property developer, this 4,400 sf 1970’s era home was completely reimagined for contemporary living.

What is immediately impressive is the sense of volume and scale. Ascending the steps to the front door and the entrance hall beyond, the space gives the impression of unfolding before you. The challenge of being greeted by the staircase was elegantly solved by installing floating treads and a glass and steel handrail creating transparency and allowing plenty of natural light to flood the main floor. The black steel support of the staircase grounds the space and adds drama.

Oversized, white hardwood oak floors draw the eyes towards the first of three living zones; a formal living room space, the dining room beyond and around to the kitchen. Here, dark and richly veined stone was cut down to tile size to create a stylish yet durable floor, white cabinets with hidden reveals and floating shelving creates a kitchen that feels frictionless. The central island provides for additional storage and performs double-duty as an informal spot to grab a quick bite.

Beyond is an informal family room space where interesting architectural elements, in the form of vertical and horizontal planes in different colours, materials and textures create a tranquil atmosphere that feels modern and restful. The neutral colour palette throughout the main floor is given depth and prevented from feeling too ethereal by judicious use of inky blacks.

The upper floor was reconfigured by RZ Interiors to provide for an additional fourth bedroom, and to allow for every room to be ensuite. The new master features a recessed ceiling with recessed lighting designed to create a soft, relaxing atmosphere. The walk-in closet is filled with clever storage solutions and creates a space for a luxurious leather-topped vanity table We were also able to carve out space to create a top floor laundry alcove with stacked washer and dryer, as well as sink laundering delicate items.

Leveraging high quality materials from top to bottom, the result in this house is a unified look that creates the feeling of home.
