The flooring is terrazzo. Vanbesian designed custom ash-wood cabinetry for storage throughout the home.

The beams were part of the original structure of the home. Ceilings are quite tall—10 feet or higher.

The new addition has two additional rooms spread across two levels to accommodate Carolina’s three teenagers.

The countertop and backsplash are Mother of Pearl polish slab, and the hood is custom made out of copper.

In the kitchen, designers Alfie Koetter and Luke Studebaker worked with woodworker Aaron Hauser of Mason Haus to create custom new millwork inspired by the look and feel of the original cabinetry. Hauser sourced sequence matched natural birch that was rotary cut to create the cabinets.

A bed built into the bathroom wall pulls down to replace the sofa. An Olio teapot designed by Barber Osgerby sits on the counter.

The architects made sure to step back the upper-level addition so as not to overwhelm the scale of the surrounding neighborhood. Plus, "If we build on top of it, and try to make it a new and larger box, it will falsify the identity,

Low-lying furniture and art makes the high-ceilinged living room appear even bigger. Most of the furnishings were sourced secondhand, though the hanging lamp is a DIY Nick made by fusing two paper shades together.

A renovation by architect Keith Burns removed the old horizontal siding and added a new facade made of corrugated metal to help the house blend in with its utilitarian neighbors.

The interior features concealed storage for convenient access to daily essentials and outdoor gear.

The concrete flooring is complemented by maple plywood walls, creating a warm, neutral interior.

The open kitchen boasts a burnt-cement floor with a playful pink pigmentation, which the architect and Flavia collaborated on together.
