As if rising toward the sky, southern-facing balconies cap each end of the structure. The deep overhangs filter harsh summer rays while allowing winter sunlight to penetrate deep into the home.

As yet another variation on traditional concrete walls, Steven Holl uses a formwork of bamboo to cast these dark ribbed boundaries to frame the Nanjing Museum of Art.

The Kiasma, which opened in 1998, is Helsinki’s contemporary art museum. Designed by Steven Holl, the building’s scale is based on the dimensions of the human body.

Iowa. The School of Art & Art History at the University of Iowa was designed by Steven Holl in 2006. Cantilevered over a pond, the structure nicely marries contemporary architecture and natural landscape.

A watercolor by architect Steven Holl was an early step toward translating an obscure musical score by István Anhalt into a new home and gallery in Seoul, South Korea
