Forty-seven years ago, Peter and Turkey Stremmel opened Stremmel Gallery, one of the first fine-art showplaces in Reno. They went on to exhibit work there by such luminaries as Wolf Kahn, Charles Arnoldi, and Phyllis Shafer. The same architect who designed the gallery, Mark Mack, designed their home, a cluster of colorful cubes in the mountains above the city.

Michael Doherty Construction completed the 5,900-square-foot house in 2017. Along with landscape designer Delphine Huetz, architects Luke Ogrydziak and Zoë Prillinger envisioned a series of giant earthen berms for the yard. A cluster of deer grass, tall switch grass, blue grama grass, and heatwave hyssop grows near the garage.

“We’re probably just fifty or sixty feet off the road, but you’re not even aware of it. You don’t feel like you’re in the middle of a city,” says Peter. The sculpted terrain partially blocks outsiders’ views. Automatic shades by Lutron do the rest.
