Over the course of 50 years, Frank Weise turned a carriage house into a residence and studio defined by intricate brickwork and a dramatic mansard roof.

Designed by Ed Niles, this crisp, white residence has floor-to-ceiling windows and a sprawling patio overlooking the ocean and downtown L.A.

Arranged in a U shape around a small olive grove, each of the Villa's three wings has a separate entrance.

Tucked away at the end of a long, private driveway, the Nine-Square House appears as an inviting cube-like volume in the middle of a forest.

The Glebe House by Chenchow Little architects is defined by its arched details and wedge-like form.

The home's unique use of glass and steel—along with its curved, multi-level structure—can be savored upon arrival. Soaring trees pepper the large property, creating a peaceful oasis.

According to the video MacDermed created to describe his vision for the house before his death in 2022, he had planned to transform the top level into an open music studio.

Outside, David wanted a bit more curb appeal and jumped at Nichols’s suggestion to cover part of the addition in roof tiles. “It’s supposed to be roofing tile, but I didn’t see why you couldn’t use it for a facade,” Nichols says.

The Patton New Century House treads lightly on the land while providing wide-open living spaces.
