Portland home in the woods

With a front facade of glass, inviting double doors, and engineered wood cladding, this prefabricated she-shed was designed by Studio Shed and is often used as a home office for women starting their own businesses or who wish to work without leaving their children for the day.

A new shed/workshop space was design and built in the backyard.

The painting studio has reclaimed longleaf pine floors that echo the material palette of the original house. The gallery-like white walls provide a place for the client’s colorful paintings to be displayed.

A pull-out sofa in the living/work area accommodates friends and family who stay overnight on the property.

The one bedroom-one bath guesthouse has a kitchenette, and also utilizes the same materials as the main house: walnut cabinets, cedar walls, and the tongue and groove ceiling treatment.

Rose’s pottery studio opens right up to the back lawn to let the sunlight (or curious pups) inside.

The designer dressed the breakfast nook with a custom table inspired by Eero Saarinen, a Louis Poulsen-designed pendant, geometric-patterned wallpaper by Pierre Frey, pale green Farrow & Ball wall paint, and a bench upholstered with vinyl from Kravet.

The master bath includes double vanities, a freestanding bathtub, and a hidden built-in television.

The master bathroom is brightened by custom lighting and natural light shining through the tempered glass shower wall.

In the shower, handmade Bubble Hex tile from the Futura collection at the Portland–based company Clayhaus Tile makes a stunning statement.

The primary suite, with custom oak casework, offers views to the south and east.

Every room in the home enjoys views of the landscape—including the dining area. The natural material palette of the interior emphasizes this connection between inside and out.

Operable floor-to-ceiling glass doors slide into pockets to open the entire great room—including living and dining areas—to the outdoors. “This allows the line between indoor and out to blur, inviting in summer breezes and fresh air,” says architect Meelena Oleksiuk Turkel.

The home enjoys a connection with the surrounding landscape with views from every room that invite the 100-acre site into the interior. “The framed views from each room are a source of pride for us,” says architect Meelena Oleksiuk Turkel. “They illustrate the way in which we design for a specific site, bringing the outdoors into the home and making the most of what the homeowners love about their land.”

This home's different roof heights required a customizable, flexible building component to make the drawings a reality.

The custom banquette has a slatted back so as to allow the window behind it to open and let in light. The table is a vintage piece from John and Kelly, made with reclaimed wood from a bowling alley. The overhead pendant is by Brendan Ravenhill.

The headboard is a custom fabrication from a live oak felled on the property, made by DeVos Custom Woodworking and Jobe Fabrications and in collaboration with JCA. The headboard “brings so much texture and life into this tiny room,” says Corral. Custom steel shelves are poised below, with a sconce from Serena and Lily mounted atop.

A custom black metal unit frames the wall-mounted television.

Dimensional tile lines the walls and the glass enclosure wraps the shower bench. A new skylight brings in natural light to the room, as it doesn’t have an exterior wall.
