New York Couple Breathes New Life Into Napa MidCentury Marvel

The mirror over the fireplace weighs about 90 pounds and, you guessed it, was found out on the street somewhere in midtown. It didn't fit n the trunk of the taxi and we had to ride home with it on our laps. I suppose it would have been more than 7 years bad luck if we'd crashed. More like eternity. That mid-century desk is in the power center of the house for sure. I wrote my thesis there while watching the bees wallowing in pollen on the Magnolia Tree right outside the window.

Our renovation opened up the cork-floored kitchen to the living/dining/den for maximum entertaining togetherness. We got that Jens Risom dining table all in pieces for 90 bucks. Hired the guy who restored the interior of Radio City Music Hall to put it all back together again and it's not only good as new, but it folds out to seat 12!

We got the idea for halo lighting the sink area at the grand opening for Arte, our friend's trendy soho hair salon. The green glass tiles are like beach glass and make for a soothing spa-like bath featuring a nice juxtaposition between the clean modern Duravit sinks and the vintage sideboard chest we had repainted at Kalbacher's Auto out in East Hampton.

The guest bath features a deep soaker jacuzzi tub and of course, when they asked if we wanted the "mood lighting option", well, I had to say yes! The original 50s pebbled glass refracts the light and the greens from the yard so beautifully I wish I had glasses made out of the stuff.

Speaking of vintage glass, the original door features some 50s fluted specimen side-lites. Love those classic casements and how about that door detail! It's all original.

We keep all of the glassware earthquake-safe in the drawers, but all of the dishes survived the Napa Quake completely intact! The chalkboard is another street find. It was the specials board at Jerry's, the classic Soho Diner where all the artists used to hang out in the 70s and 80s. We stumbled onto it out on the curb one night as we were walking home from a party at the Broadway loft of choreographer Trisha Brown and her husband the artist Burt Barr.
