A modern reconstruction of Josef Albers original 1927 design, this writing desk was built for the Moellenhoff family. Although their home was destroyed in the war, this piece, along with Albers’ famous nesting tables, was saved and brought to the United States prior to the outbreak of World War II. Nearly an exact copy of the original desk, the writing desk is made of solid oak with a yellow lacquered glass top, black lacquered drawer fronts, brass hardware, and an oak side panel that can be raised to create a larger work space.
The home incorporates ductless mini-split heating/cooling units—one in every room—that use inverter-driven compressors to provide exact control 100% of the time. This means each unit can target the rooms being used and not empty ones. Overall, this system can cut heating and cooling costs by 30% compared to traditional systems.
The overall program is centered around the notion of light and shade as a “pervasive experience,” says architect Andrew Bernheimer, whose firm collaborated with Wes Deane of Highland Builders. Double-height skylights alternate along an east–west axis to take advantage of natural light patterns throughout the day. The aluminum-clad wood windows are by Unilux, and the sliding doors are by Arcadia.
