Inside, Jack used sustainable, plant-based materials like cork flooring and bamboo structural panel walls. They exemplify the “farm-to-shelter” approach that he and his partner, Andrew Linn, foster at their D.C. architecture studio, Bldus.

When concrete trucks couldn't reach the addition site, the team switched to a pier-and-beam construction method with AAC [autoclaved aerated concrete] floor panels.

A blast of blue continues the tile-forward motif of the bathroom with Daltile's Keystone in Emerald Green. The bench's salvaged marble slab is a close color match to the pink tile backing the sink, and the sconce is RBW.

A neutral palette doesn't have to be boring. Architectural arches and 12-inch Saltillo Hex tile feel fresh and bright thanks to copious amounts of natural light coming in from new skylights in the kitchen. The light switches, from House of Antique Hardware, are paired with an unlacquered brass switcheplate.

The design team added a skylight to the shower room, which has a ribbed glass partition and wall tile from Solistone.

Even with multiple structures across their 10-acre property in Maine, Diana Arcadipone and Scott Berk only had one bathroom. This 560-square-foot guesthouse by architect Leslie Benson gives them a second, as well as space for visiting family and friends.

The pine ceiling was removed, and wall-to-wall carpeting installed underneath a Rejuvenation bed. A former built-in home office in the adjacent hallway was retrofitted to accommodate a row of closets.

The courtyard deck is also made of tallowwood, a native eucalyptus. White mahogany—a dense timber that is termite resistant—clads the exterior. The sustainably sourced timbers are also fire resistant, a crucial feature in Australia in light of frequent drought and resulting forest fires.

This living area opposite the bunks features two prominent details in the home's design: terracotta and cork. The floor lamp is by Crate & Barrel, while the ottoman and sofa are from Room and Board.

Covered terraces take advantage of the temperate Northern California climate and respect the local vernacular. A rear sleeping porch is the perfect place to enjoy warm summer and fall nights.

The new ensuite bathroom includes a spacious two-person shower. Jared installed the cement tiles, consulting a handful of online videos for instruction.

The team installed sliding fluted glass doors with wooden framing to separate the living room from the home office, which doubles as a guest bedroom.
