Inside, the main public spaces are delineated by board-formed concrete walls, built-in oak cabinetry, and radiant heated floors. The fully remodeled kitchen is located steps away.

After: The formerly dark basement was transformed into a bright studio for the homeowners' architecture practice. Three new windows and added ceiling height make the office feel spacious.

Berg likes the efficiency of built-in storage to free up floor space, such as with this wall-mounted credenza with a curved detail. “I tend to think of boats when I design a house,” says Berg.

An exposed ridge beam at the ceiling and sloping ceiling defines the living room in the open plan. The lights over the dining table are by Muuto.

The open-plan living and dining rooms are on the ground floor, via a hall laid with terrazzo with a WC.

Shoe cubbies are built into the custom millwork shelving in the entryway.

As a former librarian and true book lover, Williams liked the idea of storing her books in the living room. "At first, the built-in shelving we designed was more open, but the exposed books created too much visual clutter, so we added cabinet doors and kept a few open shelves to house a rotating display of our client's collection of quirky and artful artifacts," says Eng-Goetz.
