Lighting ideas for NYC apartment with concrete slab ceiling and no channeling allowed

I am soon going to be the owner of a 1 bed apartment on the UES. I am going to be under taking a pretty substantial renovation before I move in. The building does not allow any channeling in the ceiling for lighting or fans. I could put in a false ceiling but I would of course then lose ceiling height.

I could go with sconces or floor lighting but am looking for suggestions on others have tackled this issue. Is it worth losing a few inches to be able to put in more permanent lighting fixtures?

This is what I cannot do without a drop ceiling, but is vaguely the style I am going for.
