An artist and an architect built their home, studios, and an exhibition space inside a lushly landscaped Antwerp warehouse.

A combination of sliding doors, strategically placed voids, and large indoor plantings create fluid boundaries between indoors and out. The interior courtyard garden—landscaped with tropical plants and volcanic sand—is visually accessible from nearly every room, including the dining and kitchenarea.

Beyond the indoor/outdoor experience of each space, the architecture of the home provides a constant reminder of Florida's tropical nature. A series of extended rooflines, soffits and high windows introduces light and shadowplay throughout the interior rooms, tracking the sun throughout the day.

Each interior space is contained within floor-to-ceiling glass, opening out to exterior spaces that continue the home's living area. The line between indoor and outdoor is blurred throughout the home, yielding a space that is greater than its parts.

Rebuilding presented architect Heidi Richardson the opportunity to improve views of Mount Tam to the west and the Golden Gate Bridge to the northeast.

The Zen-inspired retreat is divided into two volumes, a private and communal wing. A Terracotta Army sculpture keeps watch in the courtyard.

Overnight, the project turned from a renovation into a full bore demolition. In its wake, a FEMA-compliant 5-bedroom, 3.5-bathroom house rose on the site.

Richardson Architects' original plan for this waterfront plot in Belvedere, California, was to revamp an existing 1960s house, but the discovery of powderpost beetles put that idea on pause.

The project was dubbed the Curved House because one of the main requests from the client was the integration of curved lines throughout the project. Outside, the most notable example of this is the exterior brick wall that emerges from the sharply linear ironwood walls in soft waves. The roof is also made of a curved Spanish tile punctuated by an extensive, angular solar array.

Ridge line views from the central courtyard highlight the topography of the natural coastal landscape, while cedar, concrete, and low-maintenance plantings enable seamless indoor-outdoor living.
