The ceiling of the third-floor kitchen is the raw underside of the roof troughs above.

The wall beneath the stairs holds hidden storage, including an Enomatic wine dispenser and Sub-Zero refrigerated drawers.

Subtly textured and tonal, a metal backsplash can be a great idea in a range of spaces, from industrial to moody and sombre. In this particular kitchen, the backsplash and drawer pulls were fabricated by 12th Avenue Iron. The cooktop is by Miele.

In this Edwardian London house, the colors and textures of brick that forms the perimeter of a outdoor courtyard, can be enjoyed through floor-to-ceiling windows in the kitchen.

All of the wood in the house—including the oak flooring, paneling, cabinetry and stairs—comes from companies run by the Hickman company in Pennsylvania. "They have a compelling story that we were very drawn to and embraced," Lang says. "They're a fourth-generation family-owned business, and they own and manage their own FSC-certified forest. They process their own wood, mill it into flooring, and sell directly."

The kitchen was the only room which received a slightly altered layout. In addition wood boards from demolished cabinets were reused to create new cabinet fronts hung on brass piano hinges. The result is a mix of period-appropriate additions and new configurations with recycled parts.

Black was a natural choice when it came to updating an already existing wet bar. The brass shelf was laser-cut from thick brass sheet--designed with a simple geometry as a nod to a classic bar.

Another custom oak unit houses the oven, range, refrigerator, and pantry.
