Kitchen hoods

The previous galley-style kitchen was dark and closed off from the rest of the house. For the remodel, Sammie requested high ceilings, no upper cabinets, and U-shaped drawers. Simple white-painted upper shelves display a collection of ceramic dishes.

The back deck features an outdoor shower designed by Scott. Made of stainless steel and brass components, it uses a garden watering nozzle for the shower and foot-wash heads.

“We pulled apart one volume and staggered it along the buildable area of the property,” says architect Matthew Ahlberg of Portland firm Barrett Made. The home is clad in unfinished cedar, meant to weather over time.

Bovee and Kirkpatrick eat at the table he designed. The cooktop, oven, and dishwasher are by Bosch; Bren Reis of Earthbound industries made the cabinets.

Kevin Fritz outfitted the living, dining, and kitchen areas with Douglas fir flooring, walnut counters, and a built-in walnut dining table with drawers for extra storage; a walnut coffee table slides out from beneath the dining table and can be carried and placed in front of the sofa.

Natural pine planks were installed on the kitchen ceiling for warmth and texture, and were sourced from a local supplier.
