The metal awning provides pleasant shade over the front porch on warm summer days.

Whether it’s cross-country skiing in the winter or trail running in the summer, the 330-foot home’s minimalist design encourages Catherine to be outside in the surrounding landscape throughout the year.

The updated doors are beautiful and functional, and are inspired by Japanese shoji screens.

The custom headboard is wrapped in blueish-green jute suede with inset rattan, while the custom closet is painted in Asian Paints “Misty Harbour” with more rattan pressed between glass. The acacia table lamp is from Fleck.

The fire pit area is arranged near the rear of the yard, where lush plantings create the feeling of an urban oasis.

The architects design for the backyard showcases an outdoor deck, bleacher seating, a lush grass area, and a deck with seating and a fire pit.

The rebuilt “Idea House,” designed by Holly Freres and David Horning of JHL design. The driveway is permeable to encourage good drainage: crushed granite gravel is installed over a stabilization mat. James Hardie exterior siding is painted in Benjamin Moore ‘White Dove,’ with reclaimed wood used for the entry and garage.

The materials of the house come together in one artful shot: concrete, metal, cedar, and glass.

“People have a real obsession with putting things on the water,” says Campos. “They feel as though they paid for ocean or something, and they just need to stare at the ocean. And, I think that they really miss any opportunity to have a bit of foreground.”

A more narrow window focuses the eye on tree trunks, creating an “abstracted view of the landscape,” says the firm.

One of the client’s goals was a low-maintenance home—so there are no gutters or skylights to clean. The angles of the exterior metal envelope allow forest debris and muck to slide off easier. “The house looks after itself in a way,” says senior designer Czarina Ray.

The firm juxtaposed a standing-seam metal envelope with thin strips of cedar on the exterior. “We're playing with the textures on the outside of the house,” says Campos, pointing out that the cedar brings a “human scale” to the industrial nature of the metal.

The concrete foundation was poured on top of a rock outcropping, so that the house would feel like part of the natural features of the site.

The bathroom walls (and floors in some models) are layered in Contec: a Danish material used to create concrete surfaces.
