Future Forward
Kitchens have come a long way from the walled-in workspaces of yesterday. Draw inspiration from these innovative spaces that demonstrate thoughtful, modern design and creative problem-solving. From the craftsmanship and service promised by Signature Kitchen Suite to kitchen renovations that transform a home, these examples point to the future of kitchen design.
Signature Kitchen Suite featured its collection of premium ranges, cooktops, ovens, refrigerators, and dishwashers at KBIS 2017. Focusing on brand presentation and the guest experience, the team created two thoughtful environments that showcased how the sleek, modern appliances fit into differing lifestyles.
To complement the white-washed custom cabinetry in her kitchen, architect Julie Salles Schaffer has designed a tile backsplash to resemble "melting butter in a white pan." Daltile arranged her two-color AutoCAD design—white and off-white—onto a mesh backing for a small fee. To soften the edges of the cabinets’ drawers and doors, Schaffer requested radial edging.
To access the spices and the cabinets above, Chris added a Putnan rolling library ladder he purchased at Restoration Resources, a Boston shop that offers used and vintage architectural artifacts. Though the ladder was originally too short for his purposes, jerry-rigging the hardware did the trick and a fresh coat of paint finished the job.Chris made the counter with a
Trespa surface, which costs just $9 per square foot and was available in a large enough size to cover the six-foot-by-10-foot island without any seams. Chris cut the edges with a circular saw and the inside holes for the sink and cooktop with a jigsaw and finished the edges with the help of an orbital sander. Photo by Kate McElwee.
