Sackett Street residence by Frederick Tang Architecture

The kitchen of this Brooklyn brownstone features a brick backsplash with a metal panel connecting the Bluestar range to the Viking chimney wall hood. The mashup of materials preserves the personality of brick with the ease of cleaning stainless steel. The island and cabinets are fashioned from remilled Douglas fir beams salvaged from Upstate New York.

The Langs use an outbuilding as a rec room of sorts. "We call that the Grace Studio," Lang says. "It's designed so a car can pull in there, but we use it as more of a rec room and work space."

The use of concrete and wood shelving and cabinets continue the texture and warmth of the brick, but in different tones and scales.

The brick walls of the extension provide a warm, textured interior that requires little more than simple furnishings and light fittings to feel comfortable and lived in.
