The team added a new deck and larger windows and doors to the garden level unit.

The stucco was removed and the original brick repointed. “There’s something very New York about a brick wall,” says Augustin.

The front door is painted a blue color that’s repeated on the kitchen cabinets for “recall,” says architect Côme Ménage of re-a.d. New Quaker windows were inserted into old openings, and the units chosen for their slim framing to allow more light inside.

A new wrought iron fence and landscaping now warm the façade considerably.

Casa Dois is second of three existing guesthouses from the new hospitality brand, the Addresses. The former fish warehouse in the coastal village of Olhão, Portugal, was transformed into a two-bedroom, two-bathroom vacation rental with heritage details.

Sitting lightly above the eelgrass, this tiny dwelling serves as a port of entry for a family getaway on the Salish Sea.

The addition was created with custom concrete that matches the surrounding buildings, as well as the tones of the London stock brick.

The transformation of a 1950s eyesore into an elegant, gallery-like home was a creative challenge for architect Kevan Hoertdoerfer and all involved. The poem “Roll the Dice” by Charles Bukowski is painted on the facade. “It expresses how we felt about the project,” says resident Karen Baldwin. “Everybody roll with it—everybody do their thing.”

The building, constructed in 1948, was designed by architect A. Rollin Caughey.
