Mimicking the look of floor-to-ceiling windows in midcentury homes was important to Nugent. The windows and doors are from Styline.

The yellow cedar pocket doors separating the kitchen from the living area were crafted by Brian Holcombe.

In the primary bathroom, a small alcove created by the closet provided just enough room for a compact 36-by-36-inch soaking tub.

The house is clad with shou sugi ban-treated cedar siding.

In the primary bathroom, the floor and wall tile is Quartziti Glacier by Satements. The Bola Sphere Suspension Lamp is by Pablo Designs.

In the dining room, the original steel window mullions were painted Farrow and Ball's Radicchio red, along with the railings and stairs below. The dining table is vintage David Naylor, and the chairs are vintage Danish modern with custom upholstery in Ghanaian textiles.

One of the couple’s favorite new details is the built-in, L-shaped bookcase in the den.

Previously, a screened porch at the front left had been enclosed for additional living space, but wasn’t very usable, so Jobe and Corral converted it back to its original purpose. Now, it serves as a mudroom and a transition space before entering the living room. The preserved board and batten siding is painted Benjamin Moore ‘Kendall Charcoal’ and the ceiling fans are from Schoolhouse. Board-formed concrete replaced the brick, and new steps are formed by limestone slabs taken from the tops of quarries so that the top surface is natural.

The couple took advantage of numerous municipal programs when landscaping the backyard. Mandy recently completed a free course through LADWP, who also promotes resources for the SoCal Turf Replacement Program, to become a certified California Native Plant Landscape: “There is an amazing amount of knowledge and resources for transitioning yards with more native/drought-tolerant plants through LADWP and the Theodore Payne Foundation,” says Mandy.

Oak cabinets on either side of the long dining room table camouflage a variety of kitchen appliances and even laundry facilities.

Client Izabel Duval worked with designer Robert Sweet to select the interior surfaces and furniture, favoring soft tones and an array of textures.
