“Barbecue season never ends,” says Liz, explaining how they live with such a small kitchenette. “We even made a cake out there.”

The self-sufficient residence operates entirely on solar power and includes an incinerating toilet and a rainwater collection and filtration system.

Simple oak furnishings from Habitat blend with the birch millwork and bamboo floor. The cabinetry, benches, and doors were built by Olivier, who studied design before becoming a filmmaker.

The arrangement of windows in the home creates a play of light and shadow and allows the family to experience different views as they move around the space. “It’s about creating a calm, comfortable home that is still dynamic,” says architect Line Solgaard. “There are 360-degree views but you don’t see in every direction at all times—there are moments of drama throughout.”

In the second bedroom, the Black Mountain College hanging lamp is by Rachel Corry and the floor lamp is by Rico Duenas.

In the second bedroom, a custom built ladder leads to a loft area with a custom built bed below. The casework is all old growth Redwood and was fabricated by Michael Mellon and Benjamin Winslow. The bedding is from Morrow Goods and the rug is from Slow Roads.

Nick rebuilt all the doors and windows from old growth Redwood. The door hardware is Baldwin mortise locksets.

The two-room coastal cabin was in massive disrepair when Nick kicked off the renovation. Rebuilding the windows, doors, framing, and floors, Nick brought his close eye for detail and sought to recreate interior elements in the spirit of the original midcentury design, but with a modern edge.

Builder Nick Maimone drew on his artistic background and the ’60s counterculture movement as he reenvisioned a home set where the Russian River meets the Pacific in Northern California.

The dining room wallpaper is from the Netherlands' Rijksmuseum, a print of Eelke Jelles Eelkema's "Still Life With Flowers."
