The staircase to the top floor is articulated as a sculptural, folded plane of timber.

The bedroom levels can be open-plan or divided into separate rooms by doors concealed in white-painted and timber-clad volumes and planes.

From the interior, windows to the rear elevation appear as voids in the plastic solid of the building volume, glimpsed between the sculptural planes of blade walls and volumes.

Gray basalt was also used for the kitchen island and backsplash.

In the kitchen, a sculptural replica of a shark hangs above the sink.

All the floors were redone in a light ash hardwood. The crisp interior paint is Benjamin Moore Super White. The kitchen cabinets are from Artistic Kitchens. A frosted glass door leads to the laundry room.

Tyler relaxes in the living room, which is visible through windows from both the rear patio and the master bedroom. “At night when we’re entertaining outside, the house lights up like a jewel box,” he says.

Tyler Lemkin turned to contractor Roderick McGrew for help refurbishing his dated Richard Neutra house in the Crestwood Hills area of Los Angeles. One of McGrew’s tasks was ripping up the pink carpeting—which had been added by a previous owner—and installing new wood floors.

Luster also restored the dining room woodwork, which became warped after an earlier remodel.
