This photo shows the changing color temperature of the drum skylight. Here at dusk when the light turns a beautiful blue. The photo also highlights our use of multiple styles of architectural lighting: tape-in recessed LED downlight, surface mounted and pendent fixtures combine to create a warm modern environment.
Once immortalized by master architectural photographer Julius Shulman and currently being considered as a historic landmark in Los Angeles County, this four-bedroom, two-bath residence was built in 1954 by builder and craftsman Ken McLeod to be his personal home. In 1964 architect Rufus Turner restored the rear after a fire damaged the living room.
Embracing this modularity, we chose to articulate these distinct prefabricated “boxes” through the use of contrasting finish materials. The modular buildings were pushed, pulled, and stepped using the typography of the site to our advantage. While maximizing unit areas on the small site, the design solutions provided further individual definition to what could have otherwise been literal nondescript “vanilla boxes”.
