Should building codes become more lax to promote affordability?

Affordable housing continues to be out of reach for many Americans—according to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, over 12 million homeowners and renters pay more than 50 percent of their annual incomes for housing. In light of the this, should building codes relax to make housing more attainable?
