H2Hotel in Healdsburg

Last weekend I spent a night at the new H2Hotel, the sister property of Hotel Healdsburg, which is one of my favorite places to stay in Sonoma County. Conceived as a younger, hipper, more affordable property—a sparse but much-needed category in wine country—the hotel is bright, airy, and eco-minded: woods are salvaged or sustainably harvested, the roof is 'living,' and an underground cistern collects and processes rainwater and runoff. Designed by David Baker + Partners, with interior design by Marie Fisher, the hotel is aiming for a LEED gold certification. All photographs by Zubin Shroff.

The rolling green roof, edged with an undulating Corten steel fin, is carpeted with succulents and wildflowers that draw birds and butterflies.

The lobby "chill space" is decked out with Roche Bobois Mah Jong modular seating in Missoni and Kenzo fabrics. The 'Waste Coffee Cubes' by Piet Hein Eek are made from scrap wood. Underfoot are fair-trade felt rugs from Peace Industry, made from lambswool and organic dyes.

The steel case displays a rotating arrangement of art, objects, games, and books, and acts as a screen between the pool deck and the lobby. All of the art in the hotel is produced by local artists. This photograph of a California live oak, printed on glass, is by Stephen Galloway.

The 36 guest rooms have floor-to-ceiling wood shutters, custom elm beds, and built-in armoires whose internal LED lamps light upon opening, like a refrigerator. Quilted headboard hangings soften the room without taking up space, are easily cleanable, and can be reversed for a different color.

Every room and suite has a streamlined work area. The wall-mounted desk is made from American Elm salvaged by the local company Alborica. The drawers and cabinets are made from Valchromat, an organically tinted wood fiber board manufactured from forest waste and residue collected from timber mills. The Emeco Navy chair is made in the U.S. with 80% recycled aluminum.
