H2Hotel in Healdsburg
Last weekend I spent a night at the new H2Hotel, the sister property of Hotel Healdsburg, which is one of my favorite places to stay in Sonoma County. Conceived as a younger, hipper, more affordable property—a sparse but much-needed category in wine country—the hotel is bright, airy, and eco-minded: woods are salvaged or sustainably harvested, the roof is 'living,' and an underground cistern collects and processes rainwater and runoff. Designed by David Baker + Partners, with interior design by Marie Fisher, the hotel is aiming for a LEED gold certification. All photographs by Zubin Shroff.
Every room and suite has a streamlined work area. The wall-mounted desk is made from American Elm salvaged by the local company Alborica. The drawers and cabinets are made from Valchromat, an organically tinted wood fiber board manufactured from forest waste and residue collected from timber mills. The Emeco Navy chair is made in the U.S. with 80% recycled aluminum.
Suites have a sitting area with a Design Within Reach daybed; Saarinen tables; hassocks made from recycled Kilim rugs; and handmade rugs woven in Ukiah. The floors in all the guest rooms are woven strand bamboo, chosen for its durability. Glasses made from wine bottles reference the vineyards nearby.
