Double-height glass now lets the communal living areas spill out onto an exterior courtyard.

Gardiner Architecture ensured that flexibility, practicality, comfort, and spaciousness were all present in Elm Street House, as well as natural connections to the oft-used backyard and the surrounding neighborhood. The kitchen units are composed of blackbutt veneer and have a matte finish; the counters are Caesarstone. A pass-through window at the sink connects to the yard and makes for easy entertaining.

The journey through the dark tunnel to the new, light-filled addition is both a texturally interesting and atmospheric experience, where the contrast between old and new, dark and light, can be felt.

An informal dining area sits opposite the see-through fireplace. The more intimate space features a Swarovski Voltaire pendant light, along with chairs by Minotti Jacques and a custom table by Henge.

The formal dining room offers an acid-washed S-Penny Henge dining table that seats 12, surrounded by Minotti Fil Noir black and gold frame dining chairs. The burnished-brass ringed lighting is also by Henge.

The masonry used for the extension is coal-fired—a process that adds vibrant light and dark shades to the bricks.

The bathroom features terrazzo floor tiles—which have a similar pattern to the material used to construct the fireplace in the living room.

An undulating wall divides the bathtub and toilet, continuing the home’s motif of curved surfaces.
