Growing up in India, we had occasional power outages. During one, I sat in front of an Impressionist-style oil painting in the house, copying it with my Alphacolor pastels. That was the first thing I ever made that I was proud of, and it’s why I brought the pastels with me when I immigrated here in 1984. It’s a treasured box full of dust and years.
