Rough-Hewn Stone and Timber Set the Tone for This Revamped Residence in Portugal

Location: Torres Vedras, Portugal

From the Architect: "This project makes use of the existing building, with the addition of an expansion. By reorganizing the use of existing spaces, functionality is optimized. A space for the press took the living room function articulating the existing spaces with the spaces of expansion. The stone parts, such as the press and others, have been rehabilitated and reintegrated into the new spaces created. The existing main house retains its function rooms on the first floor, and the remaining low buildings around the courtyard harbor the bedrooms."
In pre-existing areas, the windows have wood-framed shutters with double glazing.
The enclosed courtyard features original stone.
A wide entry door leads guests into an expansive living area.
The wood roof structure and stone elements add antique character to the space.
New tile contrasts with white-painted interiors.
The existing main house retains its functions the second floor, while on the ground floor, the living room is now a dining room, and is divided with the kitchen space.
Windows were originally framed with stone.
Large doors open to a quaint backyard shaded by trees.
A beautiful modern fireplace is set into an original stone hearth.
Each bedroom as its own bath.
The architects added large windows in the new areas.
New wide-paneled hardwood floors are used in the hallways and private spaces.
Stone slabs were used for flooring in other areas of the home.
The natural stone around windows and doors provide a rustic feel.
The modern door to and from the courtyard serves as a transition between eras.
