Rufus Bates is a furniture builder based in NYC and Aurora, NY. Rufus began his career as a stone mason, learning the art of dry stack stonework from an uncle in Vermont. Inspired by a semester studying visual culture in Paris, and encouraged by one of his professors at Pratt Institute, Rufus began studying woodworking in 2001. He spent several years apprenticing with renowned builders Kalle Fauset and Thomas Hucker, which introduced him to the high-end furniture market in New York City. In 2004, he started Rufus Bates, LLC, through which he builds custom furniture and millwork for architects, designers, and individual clients around the country.
