Living in small spaces is a relatable experience for New York photographer David Engelhardt (“Wood Works,” November 2012). A native of Idana, Kansas, and Long Beach, California, with a stint in Phoenix, Arizona, Engelhardt grew up accustomed to the wide-open spaces and big desert skies of the Western landscape; however, he quickly became familiar with the different reality of New York City living. “The very first room I rented in Manhattan was just nine by seven feet,” he recounts.
