What are the pros and cons of a formal design education? Is it always necessary?

@artcenteredu: Depends on your ambitions. Skills & how-tos are easy. Concepts, history, complex problem-solving take longer to learn.

@ZacharyEdelson: Cons: Expensive! Pros: A good program teaches how big ideas and details/construction/execution are both essential.

@modernindenver: A combo of formal design education + hands-on training are essential for success. You can’t replace on-the-job training.

@livingwhite: To be an architect, yes, but lots of other design professions don't require formal education. Passion, however, is a must.
