Immerse Yourself in Bright Color at This Midcentury Rental in Palm Springs

The William Krisel-designed home bursts with a vivid mix of vintage-inspired furnishings and bohemian texture.

When Danielle Nagel, the fashion designer and photographer behind the boutique clothing line Dazey LA, bought this 1959 abode last year, many of its defining features were still intact. That's a good thing, since the 984-square-foot house was originally designed and built by midcentury architect William Krisel. Upon taking possession, Nagel maintained the home's vintage vibe by incorporating a mélange of colorful decor to create a fun desert destination, now available to rent on Airbnb.

Dubbed the "Dazey Desert House," the two-bedroom, three-bath home offers the best of both worlds: it's nestled in a desert setting, yet only a five-minute drive from "bustling Palm Springs entertainment."

Inside, the angled sweep of the roofline and clerestory windows let in lots of desert light.

For an eye-catching display, Nagel installed paintings inherited by her grandmother against an accent wall covered in Hygge & West wallpaper. The orange and red pattern is called Arcade, and it was designed by Heath Ceramics.

On the other side of the living room, Nagel combined a leather Joybird sectional sofa with an AllModern rug.

Palm Springs Modern: Houses in the California Desert

This classic volume, now available at a lower price, showcases jet-set homes designed by the likes of Neutra, Frey, Lautner, and others. Palm Springs is famous as a mecca for the international jet set. But the city has also attracted its share of eccentrics and mavericks who have left an architectural legacy that remains unsurpassed for its originality and international influence. This book examines the impact that architects and designers have had on the desert oasis, primarily from the 1940s to the 1960s. Palm Springs Modern features examples of midcentury modernism at its most glamorous, some of them the residences of prominent figures who commissioned weekend getaways in the desert, including Frank Sinatra, Walter Annenberg, and Raymond Loewy. Adéle Cygelman’s insightful text, a foreword by architectural historian Joseph Rosa, contemporary color photography by David Glomb, and the celebrated archival black-and-white work of Julius Shulman all capture the distinctly modern allure of America’s famed desert playground.

For a bedroom accent wall, Nagel chose Justina Blakeney's Cosmic Desert wallpaper in teal, also from Hygge and West, and paired it with a Joybird bed and bright red curtains.

The home once held three bedrooms, but previous owners removed the wall that separated two of them. The adjacent space now hosts a Joybird couch with a pull-out bed, and a workspace, and it can be separated by a curtain for privacy.

The office niche features a desk from Joybird and a citrus-colored metal wall shelf by New Made LA.

Outside, a punchy dining set spray-painted by Nagel livens up the patio.
