On the second floor of 1930s building in Paris’s 10th arrondissement, designer and architect Hugo Toro’s apartment fits a world of texture and color into a 323-square-foot layout. Renovated in 2018 by the Franc0-Mexican designer, the compact space consists of a living room, an open kitchen, a bedroom with a closet, and a bathroom—all furnished with custom pieces designed by Hugo, as well as vintage and contemporary objects from different eras and destinations, including Mexico and France.

Throughout the apartment, Hugo focused on two colors: red and green, referencing the rich color palettes of renowned Mexican creatives such as painter Diego Rivera and architect Luis Barragán. Sections of the living room and bedroom walls are covered with an aluminum veneer, which Hugo designed to evoke the concept of traveling with an atmosphere reminiscent of an old train or boat.

In the main living space, an open kitchen features rounded Macassar ebony cabinets with brass edges and Rainforest stone countertops. On the red-painted wall between the kitchen and bathroom, the Parisian designer added a small porthole as a nod to French architect Charlotte Perriand.

Hugo also crafted a velvet sofa for the living room with emerald-green fabric by Pierre Frey and brass formwork that matches the detailing on the kitchen cabinets. Lacquered parquet floors made from solid natural oak connect the kitchen and living area to the bedroom, which is painted with Lichen green by Farrow & Ball.

During the renovation, Hugo installed new, double-glazed windows for optimal sound and thermal insulation. He also soundproofed the floor and ceiling with acoustic screeds. The colorful unit now features an integrated sound system that can be controlled using a mobile app, as well as a retractable TV screen and centrally controlled lighting.
