A MoMA Curator’s Estate Outside Manhattan Lists for $6.5M
Designed by I.M. Pei protégé Vuko Tashkovich, the Pound Ridge residence features barrel-vaulted ceilings that heighten a sense of airiness.
The late modernist architect and builder Vuko Tashkovich spent his career mastering forms to manipulate light, inspired by his native region of Macedonia and his mentor, Chinese-American architect I. M. Pei. Tashkovich designed a total of 57 homes—28 of which are located in Pound Ridge, New York, about an hour from Manhattan.
Located in Pound Ridge, New York, this modernist estate is one of a couple dozen neighboring homes designed by the late architect and builder Vuko Tashkovich. The design of this five-bedroom, eight-bath residence plays with geometric forms to maximize the exposure to natural light.

Shortly before his death in 1996, Tashkovich designed and built a grand, modernist estate for William Rubin, the former curator of paintings and sculptures at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York City. Rubin and his wife, curator Phyllis Hattis, worked with Tashkovich to expand his original design, incorporating additional spaces in which to display their collection of modern and tribal artwork.

Today, the gallery-like residence is listed with an asking price of $6,500,000. A hand-cut stone fireplace anchors one corner of the living room, which offers several other seating areas as well. Long stretches of wall space create the perfect canvas for displaying artwork.

A more intimate corner of the room currently serves as the dining area. The large space easily allows room for a large table without disrupting the flow for entertaining.

Off the dining room is a cozy family room, which flows into the kitchen and a breakfast nook. A large, double-sided island creates plenty of space for preparing meals or to use as a hub for entertaining.

Separated from the kitchen by a breezeway, another wing of the home offers a family room, office, and library. A two-car garage is also located in the basement level.

Above the family room is a library and office. The long space is tucked away inside one of the home’s barreled sections and is finished with built-in bookcases and two large semi-circular windows at either end.

On the opposite side of the house, the barrel-vaulted ceilings continue into the master bedroom, which also provides direct access to the rear patio. The simply designed space offers built-in dressers, as well as two individually appointed bathrooms and dressing areas.

A hallway off the master suite leads to the indoor saltwater pool. The light-filled, atrium-like space also features a spa and sauna.
