This Striking Black A-Frame Generates More Energy Than it Uses

Located near Salzburg, the Solarferienhaus S3 blends low-impact technology with high-impact design—and it’s now available to rent.

If you've been itching for an excuse to head to Austria, look no further than the freshly revamped Solarferienhaus S3 (Solar Holiday Home S3). Once an outdated 1970s structure, the A-frame now combines eco-conscious credentials with swoon-worthy design thanks to a thoughtful renovation by architect Thomas Ziesel. Yet, the home's blackened exterior and timber entryway aren't even its biggest updates.

As part of a holistic concept that mixes solar living, solar mobility, and solar leisure, the Austrian rental is topped with photovoltaic panels that produce enough energy to not only power the home, but also charge an electric car.

Located in a quaint village near Salzburg, the restored A-frame houses a contemporary, whitewashed interior. Its pale wooden floors and clay building boards conserve heat in the winter, while also cooling the home in the summer.

Within its minimalist interior, the A-frame houses two levels. The ground floor is comprised of a well-equipped kitchen unit, spacious living and dining area, bedroom, and bath. The loft, which is assessed via ladder, contains another sleeping area and study. And thanks to a glazed back wall, the home frames gorgeous Alpine views throughout.
