An Architect’s 1950s Barcelona Flat Pops With Geometric Color

The founder of Raúl Sánchez Architects restyles his dated corner unit behind a chamfered facade in Barcelona’s Poblenou area.

Inside Residence 0110, a brass-clad structural wall adds a pop of color to the open living area, which is lined on one side with black-stained oak and stainless-steel cabinets, walls, and doors. Throughout the 1,023-square-foot apartment, colorful and geometric details are echoed in accent walls and custom shelves.

Stainless-steel doors and a pink triangle threshold create a unique entryway to the bedrooms.

Architect Raúl Sánchez purchased the apartment for himself, his wife, and their infant twins just two weeks before Spain’s Covid-19 lockdown began in 2020. He wanted a place that was characteristic of his own design sensibility, using simple shapes, materials, light, and color, to enhance the complexity of the living experience.

The brass-clad central pillar serves as a remnant of the existing structural system.

A light-pink accent wall behind the bookshelf ties in with the triangular corridor to the bedrooms.

The architect tore down and reinforced the structural walls to open up two narrow rooms in the apartment. The central space became an open-plan living room, kitchen, library, and play area.

A tan-leather sofa and circular area rug soften the stark contrasts of color.

Steps away, a light-pink motif calls out a triangular corridor that gives way to the two bedrooms, one with an en suite bathroom. "It’s a big space where we can live," Raúl says.

FLOS IC S Pendant Light

The IC S Pendant Light from FLOS is a case study in balance. After watching a video clip of a contact juggler, designer Michael Anastassiades was inspired by the skill it took to spin and move the set of spheres around the juggler's body. His starting point was to capture the moment where the spheres seemed to freeze in place on the juggler's arms and edge of his fingers, thus was born the IC collection. Features a steel frame and blown glass opal diffuser. Choose between two sizes. FLOS lighting has been crafting incredible Italian objects of light since 1962. Playing with light (and its absence) is fundamental to the well-thought "flosophy" of FLOS. Combine this exploration of light with bold experimentation in shape, material and LED technology-plus the iconic ideas of international-acclaimed designers-and the result is poetic functionality at its best. The Citizenry Palermo Butterfly Chair

Dreamed up in 1938 by Argentine architects, the butterfly chair is an icon of modern design. Meticulously handcrafted from 100% vegetable-tanned saddle leather or ethically-sourced cowhide, this heirloom-quality piece ages beautifully – much like a fine wine. We partnered with a small leather workshop in Buenos Aires to bring this timeless design back to life. To create these chairs, they use only the highest quality materials. Each one takes three days to complete, all made under fair trade standards.

Gubi Pedrera Coffee Table

The Pedrera Coffee Table is designed in 1955 by Barba Corsini for the loft space at the famous landmark, La Pedrera in Barcelona. The coffee table is with its slender base and glass table top, a light table that fits into any contemporary home. The inspiration for the base of the table came from the vaulted ceilings of La Pedrera, which goes again in the Pedrera lamps, thus being characteristics for the collection.
