The legacy of prefabricated, modular, and kit homes in the Midwest goes back all the way to the Sears catalog and kit homes of the early 20th century. Today, architects, builders, and designers across the state continue to look to prefabrication methods to build new residences that take advantage of factory-built elements and minimized construction waste. Here, we’ve gathered five respected builders and designers that employ prefabrication techniques in their residences.
Square Root Architecture & Design
Square Root Architecture + Design is a Chicago- and Springfield-based architecture and design firm specializing in high-performance and sustainable building design. The firm's initial C3Prefab was one of the first prefabricated sustainable residences in the Windy City and was a prototype of how residential construction can be simultaneously affordable and eco-friendly within an urban context. Their designs use prefab modular components including structural insulated panels (SIPs). This type of flat-pack system is more of a hybrid of onsite and prefabricated construction that both minimizes transportation and erection costs of the prefab units.
