A Thoughtfully Renovated 1920s Home Seeks $1.5M in Los Angeles
Perched on a lush lot that spans nearly half an acre, the four-bedroom residence features multiple outdoor living spaces and a bonus turnkey unit.
A 1,580-square-foot residence in Los Angeles’s Glassell Park neighborhood boasts both space and style thanks to the hard work of the current owners, who treated the 1920s home to a top-down renovation after purchasing the property in 2017.

"We were a young and growing family when we moved in, so our first updates to the home took place in between nap times," explains Stacey Lee, who owns the dwelling with her partner, Anthony Mathile. One of the first tasks on the duo’s checklist was to redesign the home’s layout.

"Our vision was for the kitchen to be the centralized vantage point and entertainment hub from which all the rest of the spaces flowed," Stacey says. "It’s not very common to see the cooktop on the central island, but for us it made a lot of sense, allowing us to cook, socialize, and have eyes on the living room and play spaces all at the same time."
The kitchen features a new Bosch wall oven and a Gaggenau induction cooktop. A small skylight helps to further brighten the space.

The couple fitted the renovated kitchen with sleek, matte-black cabinetry, which pops against the surrounding white walls, along with the wooden countertops and shelving. Just steps away in the dining room, two large glass doors open up to one of the home’s many outdoor areas.

"While I designed and built most of the furniture pieces in the house, I’m most proud of the dining table," comments Anthony. Because the home’s dining area is slightly narrow, the couple wanted a table that was slim enough to allow them space to walk through the room to the deck, while also offering enough surface area for communal dining. "The breakthrough idea was to put notches in the benches, which allows them to slide under the table and be tucked away when not in use," Stacey says. "What started as pure function became this quirky design detail that really makes it unique."

Situated near the primary living areas, the home’s four bedrooms offer quiet, sun-drenched retreats. The two spa-like bathrooms feature large soaking tubs, oversized showers, and all-new fixtures. The renovated residence offers an expansive, terraced yard complete with fruit trees, garden beds, and a mahogany deck. The property also includes a detached bonus unit, which can easily serve as a guesthouse, creative studio, or gym.

After years of hard work on their Los Angeles dwelling, the owners are now seeking to hand over the keys to a new buyer. "This project was our home, but it was also the catalyst for Anthony to cement his skills and aesthetic, says Stacey. "Anthony has since turned his passion for designing and building into a full-time career. Now, we have a home that we built from the ground up due for completion later this year."
