See for Yourself

After painting the sitting room room Kendall Charcoal from Benjamin Moore’s Aura line, Neely wanted a sculptural element that would show up against the dark hue. So he assembled his white Algues set, designed by the Bouroullec brothers for Vitra, on the wall behind the sofa with pillow by Judy Ross. “Though the Bouroullec piece is manufactured in mass quantities, you can create your own take on it,” he says. “It looks great no matter how you place it. I think of it almost like an inkblot—the randomness is part of its beauty.”

Other artists represented in the park include Lynn Chadwick, Tony Cragg, Sarah Sze, and Matt Johnson. But what makes this garden most compelling? The way the art practically disappears into the sprawling landscape of green meadows and Nordic pines.

Andrew Weinstein stands in the living room of his Long Island abode designed by Bates Masi + Architects. The architects toggled wall panels and panes of custom-cut window glass on the front of the house that let in light while leaving room for large-format artwork like Adam Parker Smith’s American Totem.

Bertoia housed many Sonambient sculptures in a barn near his home. His daughter Celia fondly recalls exploring the space. "Harry always told people he saved the best ones for the barn," she says. "When I was in high school, my girlfriends and I would sneak into the barn. We’d go running around in there and bang on all the different sculptures and just have a cacophony of sound in there—oh, it was fabulous! The whole concept is to have a sculpture that is not only visually pleasing but it’s auditory and tactile. If you were standing on the floor and all these pieces were toning you could even feel the vibration in the floor. It got in your whole body."

"In the barn, because there were so many of them there, it created this amazing aura and mood, almost spiritual," Celia says. "It would affect people differently: A jet pilot comes in there and he thinks it sounds like roaring planes. A group of nuns came in the barn and they said it sounded like church bells chiming. Each person interprets it in his or her own way."

Taking inspiration from the Printemp's cupola, this sculpture features petal-shaped pieces of dichroic glass: the glass changes color depending the viewer's position, thereby creating a visually dynamic experience for shoppers moving through and up the atrium.

From Gaggiandre The Gaggiandre at the Arsenale, two docks built between 1568 and 1573 designed by Jacopo Sansovino flanked by arched walkways are the frame and inspirational source for the sculpture ‘Radix’ made by Portuguese architect Aires Mateus, an arch supported by three points and an imaginary fourth corner hanging over the Venitian Lagoon. A harmonic place to stay and rest where history, sensitivity, technology, culture and a certain affection to the site comes into the common ground that the biennale stands for.
